Pulling Together
The high cost of housing in California means that many long-term homeowners find it hard to maintain their homes after paying mortgages and property taxes. Senior citizens, disabled homeowners and others with limited incomes have no funds to undertake necessary maintenance. Yet the cost of moving is also prohibitive.
Rebuilding Together (RT) is a nonprofit organization and long-standing partner of DLA Piper in the San Francisco Bay area. RT’s mission is to provide LISA WHAT DOES SWEAT EQUITY MEAN ? so-called sweat equity—physical labour to improve the homes of indigent, disabled and/or senior citizens, keeping their housing affordable and preventing them from being displaced. Each April, volunteers from DLA Piper’s Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices spend a Saturday working on homes. As well as providing willing labour, we bear the cost of some of the renovation materials.
