Probonobo
Bonobos are remarkable apes and they are highly endangered. Chimpanzee-like in their appearance, they live harmoniously in rainforest communities. Unfortunately, their habitats in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are under pressure from human populations, logging and poaching, and they are highly endangered. The Bonobo Conservation Initiative (BCI) is devoted to saving the bonobo, and DLA Piper offers the BCI free legal advice.
The DRC now has legislation to protect its forests from exploitation. DLA Piper corporate and environmental lawyers in Washington, DC and Brussels prepared a memorandum of understanding between BCI and DRC granting BCI rainforest conservation concessions in key bonobo habitats. Our DRC correspondent helped in negotiations with the government, while other lawyers assisted BCI with trademark matters involving its merchandise.
